Cuimhneamh an Chláir, the Clare Oral History and Folklore Group have operated their archival and co-ordinating activities out of the Clare Education Centre since 2009. Over the coming year, as part of their outreach and education programme, the group will be working with Clare Education Centre on a number of initiatives with schools in Clare.
Who are Cuimhneamh an Chláir?
Cuimhneamh an Chláir was formed by a group of mainly young volunteers in February 2009. It is an independent and voluntary group that will record, document, archive and share the memories, experiences, customs, traditions and practices that characterise County Clare.
The initiative documents through digital recordings, the memories of Clare’s elderly population. We have trained and mobilised 30 volunteers (Cuairteoirí) from across County Clare to help in this process. The members of Cuimhneamh an Chláir come from all across County Clare and range from diverse professional backgrounds including teachers, archaeologists, folklorists, historians and interested members of the community. Our Advisory Board contains representatives from the leading academic, heritage, folkloric and educational bodies nationwide.
Since our formalisation in February 2009, we have conducted Life Interviews with over 100 of Clare’s oldest citizens amounting to 217 hrs of recording with people aged 105 – 76 (nine over the age of 100). In total, seven of those we have already recorded have since passed away.
