This webinar series supports teachers working with struggling readers to build secure, confident reading and spelling from the very start. Teaching decoding and encoding together from the outset can strengthen letter–sound knowledge and orthographic mapping, so reading supports spelling and spelling supports reading—leading to improved accuracy and automaticity over time.

  • Understand the evidence base: Participants will be able to explain the key principles of Structured Literacy and the Science of Reading and link these to effective practice for dyslexic and struggling readers.
  • Apply SL with Dcode/Ncode: Participants will be able to plan and teach decoding and encoding lessons using the Dcode/Ncode programme, selecting appropriate routines, pacing, and scaffolds in line with a Structured Literacy approach.
  • Deliver and monitor across levels: Participants will be able to organise and deliver Dcode/Ncode instruction for first and second level students, using simple assessment and progress-monitoring to adjust teaching and demonstrate learner progress.

With nearly four decades of experience supporting children, teenagers and adults, she brings deep expertise in helping struggling readers become competent, confident learners. Trained in the Orton–Gillingham structured literacy approach in the 1980s, Mary has taught more than 1,500 students across a wide range of ages and learning profiles.

Building on this work, she developed the DcodeDyslexia (Dcode) programme in 2021–22 and, in 2022, became a Social Entrepreneur after completing the Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Impact Programme.

Dcode now includes eight decoding books, an encoding book (Ncode), and three sets of ten decodable readers aligned with the first three decoding books—resources designed to make structured, accessible reading instruction available to every learner.
