The Word Study approach to the teaching and learning of spelling
DATE: Wednesday, 20th November and Thursday, 21st of November 2019 (two consecutive evenings)

This Workshop is suitable for Primary Teachers and Post Primary Support Teachers
These two workshops, which will include hands on practical activities, will familiarise participants with the latest research-based approaches to the teaching, learning and assessment of spelling. The content of the workshops will be relevant to teachers working at every level in primary school (including Gaelscoileanna) as well as support teachers in Secondary School.
The workshops will include diagnostic analysis of student free writing samples and strategies will be recommended to address identified needs.
The facility to submit questions in advance will ensure that these workshops are relevant to the needs of participants.

Eoin Shanahan has taught at every level in Primary school over a period of almost forty years. Prior to his retirement, he spent a number of years as an advisor with the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) where he continues as an Associate. Eoin has spent many years researching and supporting schools in the teaching, learning and assessment of spelling. He has done some pioneering work in the areas of Phonological and Phonemic Awareness, as evidenced in his seminal work 'Towards an Inventory of the Phoneme-Grapheme Units of Standard Irish English', published in Voices of Educators in 21st Century Ireland (Hibernia College, 2018).
