The goal of this series of workshops is to provide practical advice on using a problem-solving approach to teach the strand of Number. Each workshop will have no more than 25 participants and will be interactive, address questions from participants and will highlight helpful, freely available resources for teaching such as Nrich, Mathigon, Fraction Talks. We will invite you to explore tasks, discuss your own experiences and try new ideas in your classroom. 

Engaging approaches for the teaching of Number such as the use of picture books, hands-on and digital tools will be discussed.  The messages will be universal to all classes and you can choose to focus on junior or senior primary activities in breakout room tasks. 

This series of workshops will be particularly useful for those who are leading numeracy in their schools as we look toward the forthcoming new mathematics curriculum.  

Biography - Patrick Neary, Sinéad McGill & Dr Siún Nic Mhuirí

Patrick has taught in St. Cronan’s Senior National School, Swords, for eight years and he currently teaches 5th class. He is an NQT mentor and a member of his school's Professional Support Team. In 2017, he completed his Master of Education in DCU, specialising in Mathematics Education. Since then he has worked as a part-time lecturer in DCU’s Institute of Education, facilitating modules on Number and Shape & Space. 

Sinéad currently teaches first class in St. Joseph’s NS, Dundalk. She has recently completed her Master of Education in Dublin City University, specialising in Mathematics Education and is particularly interested in the teaching of number.

Patrick and Sinéad are contributors to the the Maths4All team, a project funded by Science Foundation Ireland and led by Dr Siún Nic Mhuirí, which aims to provide high-quality activity plans, professional development material and video examples of mathematics teaching to Irish teachers.
