Engaging Students in the Creation of their own STEAM learning

https://sway.cloud.microsoft/IPyiPiLaqlXbMWeP

STEAM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Art and Design, and Mathematics subjects in school and adult education. Our project is a 3-year programme of research and development into STEAM education and training carried out by a partnership of six primary and secondary education providers in Ireland, Croatia, Norway, Portugal, and Greece. We have called our project “STEAMing” - short for "STEAM: International Guidance to best practice."

European and National policy statements for 2020 and beyond see increased knowledge and competence in STEAM subjects as essential to foster innovation and creativity.  We address this need through the identification and analysis of best practices in STEAM primary and secondary education in 5 countries in different socio-economic, demographic, and educational contexts. We address the particular needs of children from migrant and itinerant communities; children with special educational needs; and ethnic and linguistic minorities. We also address the uneven but persistent under-engagement of girls in STEAM subjects.

We aim to explore the crucial questions of "what works, where, why, and for whom" in STEAM education.  Our findings and conclusions will be used to produce an innovative range of practical products and resources for the training and support of all members of our target groups in any European country - teachers, school leaders, educational advisors, administrators, and policymakers. Through the wider dissemination and exploitation of our outputs, we hope to facilitate an enhancement of STEAM teaching and learning that will ultimately make a significant positive impact on the educational engagement and attainment of school students across the whole European area.

Clare Education Centre hosted the first project meeting of the STEAMING Erasmus+ Project from November 11th – 15th 2019.  STEAMING is a three year project about engaging students in the creation of their own STEAM learning.  The project is a Research and Development programme in STEAM education and training. STEAM is teh acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.  The project is being led by Clare Education Centre in partnership with Mary Immaculate College Limerick and educational institutions from Croatia, Greece, Norway and Portugal.

STEAMING Erasmus Project

The initial project meeting involved presentations, seminars, workshops and project planning.  The delegates warmly praised the STEAM workshops presented by staff from St Senan's NS Kilrush, O'Callaghan's Mills NS and St John's NS Cratloe.  Seminars were presented by Michael Browne, Evelyn Sorohan and the STEM Department from Mary Immaculate College.  There were interesting exchanges on a philosophy of STEAM education and on opportunities for developing active engagment in collaborative STEAM learning and problem solving.

School visits were undertaken to St Senan's NS Kilrush, O'Callaghan's Mills NS, St John's NS Cratloe, St Flannan's College Ennis, St Joseph's Secondary School Tulla.  The visitors were highly complimentary of the reception they received in each of the schools and commented very positively on the positive, affirmative, learning atmosphere in the host schools and the active involvement of students in their learning and in the daily life of the schools.

Over the three year duration of the project, it is expected that over 15 Clare Schools will participate and contribute to the development of teaching and learning resources for STEAM.  It is further anticipated that the experieces and resources developed will benefit schools across all the partner countries.
