Practically Approaching the New Leaving Certificate Geography Specification: Strand Three – The Global Environment

Target Audience: Suitable for Post Primary Geography Teachers
The webinar will begin with a concise overview of the Learning Outcomes within the Global Environment strand, clearly outlining what is new, what remains unchanged, and what has been removed from the previous course.
A key focus of the webinar will be a practical walkthrough of planning and teaching Learning Outcomes 3.12 and 3.14, which represent a significant shift from the old syllabus:
- 3.12 explore the concept and relevance of geopolitics
- 3.14 investigate a geopolitical territorial dispute
Lee and Niall will guide teachers step-by-step through the process of planning Units of Learning, developing Core Knowledge Questions, designing student-ready PowerPoint lessons, and implementing effective assessment strategies aligned with the new specification.
In addition, they will clearly explain the role of the Unifying Strand in the new course and demonstrate how it can be embedded explicitly and practically within lessons to support student understanding and long-term success across the specification.
All participants will receive a comprehensive suite of ready-to-use resources, including:

Lee O Donnell

Lee O’Donnell is a teacher of Geography & History at Woodbrook College in Wicklow. He is the Author of ‘The Natural World’ LC Geography book with Edco. He is currently writing a book for the new LC Geog specification called ‘World of Change’ with Edco. Additionally, he is the co-author of ‘A History of Change’ JC History textbook with CJ Fallon. Geography/History Methodology Lecturer at University College Dublin. LC History content creator for Exam Revision. Host of the Leaving Certificate revision podcast ‘Skin in the Game’. Additionally, he holds an Assistant Principal I post in his school.
Niall Lenehan

Niall is a teacher of History and Geography in Dunshaughlin Community College Co. Meath. He has authored several books, including Revise Wise Junior Cycle History and A History of Change Junior Cycle History. He frequently delivers CPD seminars to teachers around the country through various education centers, covering topics including retrieval practice, curriculum design & planning, and developing critical thinking. He is vastly experienced in the area of online learning having designed and delivered Junior Cycle history and geography courses for digital learning platforms such as Homeschool.ie and Exam Revision.
